In April 1957, Stanfc:rd University proposed the construction of a two-mile long linear electron accelerator capable of accelerating electrons to energies of 10 to 20 CeV for use in physics research. Congressional authorization for this machine was given in September 1961, and construction of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) started in July 1962 on 480 acres of land near Stanford University under a prime contract with the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. 1
